About This Web Site

The Web Committee at W. Frank Steely Library has taken care to create a Web site that was available to as many people as possible regardless of physical disabilities or technological limitations. For an explanation of the accessibility features that we have built into the site, please read our Accessibility Statement.

Many of the features that have been included are dependent on a strict observance of the Web standards defined by the W3C. At the bottom of each page in the site there is a graphic for XHTML 1.1 and CSS. To learn more about this, read our statement of Web Standards Compliance.

Recent browser versions recognize standards-based Web design but many people continue to use non-standards compliant browsers. Because of this there are a number of necessary work-arounds and known issues with certain browsers. To find out how standards compliance will effect your browser, read our Browser Issues page.

Anyone who plans to edit pages on Steely Library's Web site should first consult our Style Guide. This document explains how to comply with the standard and how to use site defined features.

A feature that standards compliant browsers offer is user selected alternate styles. In order to extend this feature to certain non-standards compliant browsers, a customizer is being offered. To learn more about the customizer or to try out an alternate style, visit the Customizer page.

When looking at this site keep in mind that it is the product of an ongoing learning process. In the time since the standards-compliant version of this Web site's release in the Summer of 2003, it has become apparent that some things work better than others. Sizing fonts with ems may not be as utopian as we'd hoped. But, because content and presentation have been separated, problems can be corrected site wide via style sheets. It isn't clear to us yet if setting a min-width is a good idea or not. If practice shows it to be a bad idea, it's easy to correct. If you have a problem with the site that we've not addressed, or a solution to a potential problem, please contact us.

This message is only visible to text browsers and non-standards compliant graphical browsers. If you are using a graphical browser, you may want to consider an upgrade. While layout and styles are hidden from non-standards compliant browsers, content is available to all. To learn why we do this, view our Accessibility Statement.
