High School Teachers
Things to Know Before You Bring Your High School Class to Steely Library
- High school classes (grades 9-12) working on a specific research assignment are welcome to visit Steely Library as a group to use the library resources.
- We regret that we are unable to provide general library tours to other school groups.
- We welcome groups of up to 50 students. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate groups of more than 50.
- Because we want students to get the most out of their time in the library, teachers MUST schedule a class with a librarian to take place as soon as students arrive and before they begin individual work. Our library provides many services and can be a complicated place to navigate. Students will need instruction before they begin.
- Visits must be three hours or less, including time spent in the library's classroom. Students are welcome to return independently.
- The librarian who will conduct your class will email you to confirm the appointment and request a copy of the assignment.
- Topics covered in class will be related to the assignment and subject matter of the course.
- A teacher must accompany the class and remain with the students throughout the visit.
- One adult per 25 students must accompany the class.
Scheduling Classes
- Please schedule visits at least two weeks in advance, using the online Face to Face Library Instruction Request form. When using the form, please type HIGH SCHOOL CLASS in the box entitled "Days and Times Class Meets." Because the requested date may be unavailable, we recommend that you suggest several possible dates for your visit.
- Any special requests, information, etc. may be typed in the last box on the form, entitled "What Resources and Strategies..."
- No class visits may be scheduled during NKU's exam periods or the week immediately preceding the beginning of semester exams.
Our Facilities
- Photocopying and printing cost 10 cents per page. To print, students will choose the print to the third floor Public Service Desk option from the print command menu, and will pay and pick up all printing jobs at the Public Service Desk on the 3rd floor of Steely.
- Unfortunately, there are no lockers or secure areas where students may leave personal belongings while working in the library.
- The library has posted a number of Research Help guides on our website. These cover basic library skills and research resources by subject. Teachers and students planning to visit the library are encouraged to explore these pages in advance of their visit.
- Reference books and periodicals are to remain in their areas to ensure access by all library users.
- The library staff and patrons thank our visiting students in advance for their considerate behavior while visiting Steely Library.
