The Book Connection brings students and faculty together uniting them with a shared reading experience. The following are some suggested tools to facilitate discussion and learning outside the classroom. Most of these tools are directed at faculty, but students will find some of these useful too.
- Blackboard Wiki Tool
- Create a wiki in your course shell using the wiki tool in Blackboard. The two-minute video linked above will walk you through the set-up steps. In Blackboard, you can also assign a grade to wiki contributions.
- Blogging in Blackboard
- Create a blog using this tool in your Blackboard course. The quick video above will walk you through the set-up steps. As with the wiki, blogs can be set up to assign a grade.
- PBWorks
- The basic plan is free and allows for up to 100 users. Set the wiki up and invite other students, friends to participate and contribute content.
- WikiSpaces
- A public "higher education" account allows faculty to create a free wiki with unlimited users. Invite members or accept requests.
- Goodreads
- Sign up and invited your friends so you can share readings lists, reviews, and recommendations with each other. Join a group, message friends, and compare your reading tastes with your friends.
- Book Movement
- Invite your friends to a virtual book club. Use the site to create your own "club" page, suggest books, and set up discussion topics. This is a tool you could easily use in conjunction with a face-to-face club. On your club page, you can set up meeting times and post directions. Book Movement also provides lists of recommended books for book clubs with suggested discussion questions.
