Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic

Steely Library is an institutional member of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), which provides textbooks and literary classics in audio format on CD and four-track cassette tape. This service is only available to NKU students, faculty or staff members who have a documented print-related disability. As an institutional member, Steely Library can only provide RFB&D materials to individuals who have been certified as having a visual, perceptual or other physical disability that limits their ability to effectively use standard print. If you are an NKU student, faculty, or staff member who has not been certified and/or not filled out a RFB&D borrower's form, contact the Testing and Disability Services Office here at NKU.

Please note: RFB&D will be provided with certification information on all individuals using RFB&D recorded books through Steely Library's institutional membership.

Steps for using RFB&D:

  1. Contact: Sue Roth, Director (See above for contact information.)
  2. Search RFB&D's online catalog of books to find the title you need.
  3. Use ILLiad to request RFB&D books on CD or tape. If you prefer, you may contact the Interlibrary Loan Department via telephone at 859-572-6365 to request your title.
  4. After receiving notification that the materials are here, pick up the CDs or tapes from the Main Circulation Desk on the third floor of Steely Library.
  5. Return used CDs or tapes to the Main Circulation Desk of Steely Library for their return to RFB&D.
  6. The CDs require special software. Steely Library makes this software available inside the library. Please contact the Information Desk for assistance.
  7. The audio tapes require a four-track cassette player. If you do not own a four-track cassette player you may:
    • Contact your local public library about obtaining a free four-track cassette player from the Kentucky Talking Book Library
    • Use a four-track cassette player in NKU's Media Services

If you need assistance using the online catalog of books, link to "Ask a Librarian": Ask a Librarian, or ask to speak with a research librarian at the Information Desk, (859)572-5456. If you need additional accommodations, contact us at our Ask a Librarian service.
