Betsy Herndon Garland, the First Graduate of the LIBS Program at NKU

In December of 2011, Betsy Herndon Garland of Cadiz, Kentucky became the first graduate of the Library Informatics Bachelor of Science program at Northern Kentucky University. She was also a recipient of a scholarship from the federally funded project called Bridging the Gap: Supplying the Next Generation of Librarians to the Underserved Counties of Rural Kentucky. This project was made possible through a grant from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program at the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Its goal was to expand online paraprofessional library programs and provided scholarships and technology stipends to more than 50 library staff members who work in the commonwealth's high-poverty rural areas.
Betsy is employed at the John L. Street Public Library in Trigg County, Kentucky. A graduate of Trigg County High School, Betsy attended Hopkinsville Community College with the help of a Rotary Scholarship before transferring to Northern Kentucky University.
Here is what she had to say about her experience:
I have definitely become much better at my job since using what I learned from my degree. But, most importantly, I believe that in the near future I will be promoted to a full-time job at the library based on my degree. I'm very excited about this prospect and at work I've been spending a lot of time being prepared for the responsibilities I will have when I am promoted to head of the circulation desk. My Library Informatics degree has definitely fast-tracked me towards full-time employment and has put me at the top of the list.

Photography students use University Archives photos in creative exhibit
Visit the Student Union to see NKU Then/Now, a creative student exhibit that compares campus scenes from the past with NKU in the present.
Students in Professor Chris Smith's Applied Photography class visited the Schlachter University Archives in Steely Library last semester and selected old photographs from the archival records that showed a place or scene on NKU's campus. The students then photographed the same location or image in its present state. Displayed side-by-side, the photographs illustrate many changes in NKU's built environment.
NKU Then/Now will be on display in the Student Union near Starbucks until March. The students have already generously donated their modern photos to the archives. When the exhibit closes, they will also donate their prints to the archives where they will be preserved and available for future research.
