Information Literacy Competencies

University 101

University 101 is one of four courses in NKU's information literacy sequential curriculum. The UNV101 library component is intended to be an introduction to the physical facility and basic library services. Research components are introduced in English 101, Speech 101, and English 291 and are not duplicated in the library's UNV101 curriculum. This approach addresses students' concerns that they not receive redundant instruction.

The library component of University 101 emphasizes the following competencies:

  1. Learn about basic library services available in person & online
  2. Learn where services are located & how to access them
  3. Learn to appreciate the importance of information in daily life
  4. Understand that the library is part of a large network of information sources that will continue to be useful in the future
  5. Understand that information searching requires time, diligence, and practice, and that skills are developed over time
