Speech 101: Principles of Speech Communication

Information for Faculty

Steely Library's Information Literacy Competencies Sequential Curriculum is designed to provide unique yet vital information literacy experiences for students as they pass through NKU's required curriculum. This should ensure that as students move through English 101, Speech 101, and English 291 (and, in some cases, UNV 101), they develop research competencies that are specific to each course, rather than hearing the same presentation in each of the courses.

For Speech 101, the competencies are:

  • How to choose and refine topics
  • How to evaluate sources (print and Web)
  • How to find statistics and data to support speeches

Faculty from Steely's department of Research and Instructional Services offer the following instructional services for SPE 101 courses:

  • Instruction sessions in the Steely Library classroom
  • Speech faculty schedule a time to bring their class to Steely Library for a full class session addressing all of the competencies listed above. Sessions must be scheduled no less than two weeks ahead of time.

  • Mini-sessions in the course classroom
  • Steely faculty come to the SPE 101 classroom for a 20-minute mini-presentation that addresses only ONE of the competencies listed above. Three separate sessions are possible, each addressing a different competency. Sessions must be scheduled no less than two weeks ahead of time.

  • Other services
  • Speech 101 instructors may encourage their students to use library services listed on the Steely Library web site. These services include Research Help, the Research Consultation Service, the "Ask a Librarian" email reference service, and online Chat reference service.

Research and Instructional Services faculty may also assist in devising assignments to apply the Speech 101 competencies."
