Ingenta Online Document Delivery Service

General Information

Ingenta offers NKU faculty access to articles from over 29,000 journals and scholarly publications. Many of these materials are delivered immediately, as online .pdf files. Non-electronic documents are sent to users via fax. Fax copies are available within 48 hours, Monday through Friday.

Ingenta also provides indexing and abstracting services for selected articles available from Science Direct. If at any time you would like to request Science Direct articles, or any other articles that are not available from ingenta, please use the ILLiad interlibrary loan system.

Creating a User ID and Password

It is necessary for NKU users to sign up for ingenta while using a computer that is within the Northern Kentucky University IP address range. Any computer on the Highland Heights campus, owned by the University should be fine. Open ingenta, by directing your browser to http://www.ingentaconnect.com. You should find yourself looking at the following screen.

Ingenta Login Screen

Click on the words "sign up here." This will take you to a screen asking you to select your registration method.

Select Registration Method Screen

Click on "personal registration."

Fill in the web form, making sure that you provide information in all the boxes that are marked by an asterisk. Ingenta requires that all user names be unique, so you may need to try a few before you find one that is acceptable to ingenta. When you have finished filling in the form, click on the button that says "register." This will take you to a "thank you" screen. Ingenta will also send you an email to confirm your account has been created.

Claiming your Departmental Account

You are now an official NKU ingenta user, BUT you will need to tell ingenta how you are going to pay for the articles that you request. To do this you will need to click on the last item in the list on the "thank you" screen: "Entering payment details and claiming institutional deposit accounts."

Thank You Screen

All Departments at NKU have accounts in ingenta. Funds in these accounts are provided by Steely Library. In order to claim your departmental account, you will need the account number and password for the account from which you will be drawing funds. Please contact Sheri Myers at x6026, for your departmental number and password. Enter these into the form on the "payment details" screen and click "go."

Payment Details Screen

After you click "go", ingenta will send you back to the "payment details" screen. You should now see the name of the account from which you will be drawing funds, under "Payment Accounts", near the top of the screen. Ingenta will draw funds from the account that you have most recently claimed.

Finding Articles on ingenta

It is not necessary to be logged on with your user ID and password, in order to search ingenta for articles. It is only necessary to log on when you want to purchase articles using the account you have claimed.

To log onto ingenta, point your browser to http://www.ingentaconnect.com. Enter the user ID and password that you created earlier and click "go." This will place you at the Northern Kentucky University ingenta home page.

You can investigate ingenta's collection of documents in two ways: by searching, and by browsing. Searching by keyword can be done in the quick search box that appears on most ingenta web pages. To search the greatest number of documents, click on the radio button next to "fax/ariel articles." Online articles are available immediately but the pool of documents is smaller.

More advanced searching can be accomplished by clicking on the words "Advanced Search" that appear in the upper right hand portion of the screen on most ingenta web pages. This will allow you to search by article title, keyword and abstract, author, publication title, volume and number, and by year.

To browse ingenta, click on words "Browse Publications" that appear in the upper right hand portion of the screen on most ingenta web pages. Publications can be browsed by title, subject area, and by publisher.

PLEASE REMEMBER: If a bright pink symbol for holdings appears next to the journal or article title, Steely Library owns that journal. Please contact Steely Library for help in locating journals we own.

Ordering Articles

Complete bibliographic citations for articles will appear in response to your searches. To purchase an article, add it to your shopping cart by clicking the button marked "Add to cart" that appears beneath the citation. If you wish to remove an item from your cart, simply place a check in the box next to the title, and click "remove" at the top of the list.

When you have finished gathering the articles you wish to purchase, click on the button marked "proceed to checkout." You will be asked to enter your account password. This is your departmental password, and not your personal account password. Remember, this password is case sensitive. Enter the password and your article(s) will be faxed to you or made available as a .pdf file.
