General Borrowing Provisions
Identification for NKU faculty, students, and staff is a valid NKU picture All-Card. Students who do not have a validated ID may show proof of current enrollment from the Registrar or Bursar (listing their name and Social Security Number) and a picture ID. Gateway Community College faculty, students and staff will provide the library with a Gateway ID card or a picture ID identifying that person.
Other categories of borrowers must show a valid ID from their institution. A picture ID such as a driver’s license will be required for verification if the library card or ID doesn’t contain a picture.
Items from the circulating collection may be borrowed for the time period designated by the patron category. Media Collection materials circulate for 14 days to qualified patrons.

Renewals
Most circulating items may be renewed for one additional loan period, as long as an item has not been requested by another patron. Renewal requests may be made in person, or by telephone. A patron may also renew items from "My Account" in NKUIRE.
Online Hold Request
Patrons may request that an item in Steely Library's circulating collection be held at the third floor Public Service Desk for pickup. With an item on the library catalog screen, click the "PLACE A HOLD" tab. Provide the information at the prompt. Patrons are notified when the item is available, either by email or phone. The item will remain on hold for one week.
If a faculty member finds a title in the library catalog that he/she would like to have delivered to their office, all that faculty member has to do is click on "Place a hold" in the library catalog. Just supply the last eight digits of the All Card number and last name. Access Services will find the item, check it out to the faculty member and deliver it to their office.
Fines, Lost, and Damaged Items
Fines accrue at the rate of fifty cents per day, for every day the library is open. The maximum fine per item is $15.00.
Fines for Reserve materials are separate from the above policy. These fines accrue at the rate of 25 cents per hour for each hour the library is open up to a maximum of $25.00 per item. (This includes keys for Group Study Rooms.)
Overdue laptops accrue a $6.00 an hour fine. Damaged or lost laptops have a replacement cost of $1500.00
Borrowers in all categories are responsible for fees assessed for damaged or lost library materials. The standard replacement fee is $90.00 plus a $10.00 processing fee. Arrangements to pay in installments can be made at the discretion of the Circulation Supervisor on duty.
Steely Library's Usability Testing Program offers a voucher good for the repayment of $20.00 in library fines and fees. This voucher can be applied to the library account of your choice. For more information, and to sign up for a testing session, visit our Usability Testing webpage.
Return of Lost Items
If an item is lost and paid for, then subsequently found and returned, a refund request can be made. Only the replacement fee can be refunded. The $10.00 processing fee will be retained to offset the expenses for processing, etc.
Delinquent Borrowers
LIBRARY SERVICES CAN BE DENIED FOR ANY PATRON (FACULTY, STAFF, OR STUDENT) WHO HAS OUTSTANDING DELINQUENT OBLIGATIONS.
Before library materials are due, a Courtesy Notice is sent out as a reminder to return checked out materials. An Overdue Notice is sent out 7 days after checked out materials are due. Library notices are sent by email to library patrons with an active email address, all others receive notice via the US postal service. Patrons are billed for lost items when overdue materials are three months overdue.
