These photos of a Detroit neighborhood offer hints of what once was. What happened to the people who lived and worked in these buildings? A number of economic transformations since the 1970s reduced the value of, or eliminated the need for their labor. These transformations include a shift from a manufacturing- to a service -based economy resulting in the transfer of tens of millions of manufacturing jobs out of the United States and a massive exodus of jobs from cities to the suburbs.
